Our Options. Your Choice.

Out-Front provides a suite of handrim choices that vary in their ergonomics, coating surfaces, and functionality. There is no "best" option for everyone. Instead, you have the freedom to choose your handrim based on your preferences.

  • The Natural-Fit has a contoured thumb piece and an oval component that together create an optimal ergonomic grip. Size and coating options allow for better customization.
  • The Surge is an all-in-one, single component handrim with a Gription Strip, a rubber strip that goes all the way around the top surface of the oval for increased friction while leaving the side surface smooth for braking.
  • The Q-Grip is a fully-coated handrim that sets itself apart due to its unique coating surface and superior durability.

In addition to these handrim options, many of Out-Front's handrim components are interchangeable. Please use our Handrim Feature Finder below to see where your preferences may lead you and to learn about our different handrim options. The choice is yours.

Choose Your Handrim:

With limited hand function and limited ability to grip a handrim comes the need for a grippy surface to create friction for pushing with the palm of the hand. Out-Front has two handrims that may meet this need: The Q-Grip and the Surge. The Q-Grip is a fully-coated handrim and the Surge is a partially-coated handrim.

The Q-Grip

  • Fully-Coated Grip
    • The Q-Grip is coated with an exclusive anti-slip, latex-free, neoprene coating that makes a difference with every push.
    • The fully-coated, high friction surface makes the Q-Grip ideal for anyone with limited hand function.
  • Unsurpassed Durability
    • Superior application and state-of-the-art manufacturing process insures even layering and the strongest possible bond.
  • Light Weight
    • Compared to the average coated handrim which weighs 16-32 ounces, the Q-Grip is relatively light, weighing just 20 ounces.
  • Flexible Mounting
    • Can be mounted in the short or long tab position based on user preference.

The Surge

  • Partially-Coated Grip
    • For those with some gripping capability, the combination of a grippy surface and a smooth surface is ideal for both propulsion and braking.
  • Gription Strip
    • The Gription Strip is a high friction strip that provides a grippy propulsion surface.
    • The rubber strip goes all the way around the top surface of the oval.
  • Smooth Braking
    • The remaining surfaces of the oval (the side surfaces) are hard anodized in black to provide a smooth braking surface.
  • Flexible Mounting
    • Can be mounted in the short or long tab position based on user preference.

The Surge LT

  • Partially-Coated Grip
    • For those with some gripping capability, the combination of a grippy surface and a smooth surface is ideal for both propulsion and braking.
  • Lighter Weight
    • Uses a reduced weight, smaller profile oval; the Surge LT weighs just 17 ounces.

Possible Thumb Piece Option:

The Surge is an all-in-one, dual-surface handrim. However, there is also the option to include the thumb piece component from the Natural-Fit with the Surge. Doing so closes the gap between the Surge and the rim of the wheel but requires the use of the long tab. Out-Front offers two different coatings on the thumb piece to again allow end users to choose their ideal option.

The Standard Grip Thumb Piece

  • Low Friction Coating
    • The Standard Grip thumb piece uses a powder coating that provides a low friction surface which can be easier on the hands or better for those who do not like high friction surfaces.
  • Closes the Gap
    • The thumb piece closes the gap between your rim and wheel (so that your fingers do not get caught).
    • Handrim must be mounted in the long tab position.

The Super Grip Thumb Piece

  • Grippy Surface
    • The Super Grip thumb piece uses an advanced copolymer coating that provides a higher friction surface (it is similar to a vinyl coating) ideal for those who want a grippier propulsion surface for the thumb.
  • Closes the Gap
    • The thumb piece closes the gap between your rim and wheel (so that your fingers do not get caught).
    • Handrim must be mounted in the long tab position.

Choose Your Oval Option:

With full hand function and ability to grip a handrim comes the ability to take advantage of the ergonomic features and other options offered by Out-Front's handrims. The first component to consider is the oval. The oval is a key part of providing an ergonomic grip to propel the wheelchair and serves as an important braking surface. Each oval has its own unique advantages.

Choose Your Thumb Piece Option:

The thumb piece is a component part of the Natural-Fit handrim that closes the gap between the oval and the rim of the wheel. The thumb piece also enhances the ergonomic grip of the handrim. Although the thumb piece was originally designed as part of the Natural-Fit, it can also be used seamlessly with the Surge.

Out-Front offers two different coating options on the thumb piece to again allow end users to choose their ideal option. There is also an option to choose only the oval without the thumb piece. There are a variety of reasons why people may choose to omit the thumb piece. For example, some choose to the omit it to allow them to mount the oval closer to the wheel rim.

The   in combination with the   provides you with an optimal ergonomic grip which research has demonstrated reduces the effort necessary to grip the rim which means that you can cover the same ground with less work and less fatigue. Because the average person in a wheelchair pushes on their handrims 2000-3000 times a day, these ergonomic benefits can make an extraordinary difference.

Choosing the   means that you have chosen a smaller profile oval that is also lighter. This is ideal for people who have smaller hands or for those who place a premium on always ensuring that they have the lightest weight components on their chair. Please also keep in mind that if you have large hands, choosing the LT version may sacrifice some of the ergonomic benefits and it is possible that your fingers may wrap underneath the handrim far enough so that they hit the tabs on the inside of the handrim.

Choosing the   and the   means that you have a combination of low friction and high friction surfaces on your handrim.

Choosing the   and the   means that you have the maximum amount of high friction propulsion surfaces on your handrim. Grippier surfaces are particularly helpful when going up ramps, hills, or when traversing difficult surfaces (e.g., like deep-pile carpeting). The side surface of the oval is hard anodized in black to provide a smooth surface for braking.

Choosing the   and the   means that you have the maximum amount of smooth or low friction surfaces on your handrim. The   has a powder coat that provides a low friction surface on the thumb area to go along with the smooth braking surface on the anodized oval component. This choice caters to users particularly interested in the ergonomic features of the Natural-Fit but who do not like high friction surfaces.

Choosing the   and the   means that you have a combination of smooth and high friction surfaces on your handrim. Many people prefer this combination because the grippy thumb piece is ideal for increasing propulsion efficiency while the entirely smooth oval is ideal for controlling speed and for braking. This choice caters to users who want both the ergonomic benefits of the Natural-Fit along with a grippier propulsion surface.

The  's Gription Strip is particularly helpful when propelling up ramps, hills, or when traversing difficult surfaces (e.g., like deep-pile carpeting). The side surface of the oval is hard anodized in black to provide a smooth surface for braking. The   provides a larger gripping surface than the standard round tube wheelchair handrim but the Surge does not add any width to your chair (it can be mounted in the short tab or long tab position).

The   provides a larger gripping surface than the standard round tube wheelchair handrim. The   is a completely hard anodized, smooth surface for controlling speed and braking. In addition, the oval only selection allows the user to mount the handrim in either the short tab or long tab position.

The   is a partially-coated handrim. This option is for those who prefer dual surfaces on their handrim: The Gription Strip is a coated, high friction strip that goes all the way around the top surface of the handrim which provides a grippy propulsion surface combined with the smooth braking surface on the side of the handrim.

The   is a partially-coated handrim that has a smaller profile oval than the Surge. The smaller profile shrinks the smooth braking surface and reduces weight.
